Non-Corneal Refractive Surgery
Clear Lens replacement and Phakic Intraocular Implants
Some patients are not candidates for LASIK or other operations on the cornea. Alternatives include Clear Lens Replacement and Phakic Intraocular lens implants.
Clear Lens Replacement
Clear Lens Replacement is the same procedure as cataract surgery except the crystalline lens has not clouded into a cataract. This operation is generally reserved for patients over age 40 that are hyperopic (farsighted). The technique, pre and postoperative management are discussed under cataracts. Soon the FDA will approve an accommodative Implant that partially restores the ability to change focus from far to near. The accuracy of lens replacement surgery is very good and reduces the dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
Phakic Intraocular lens implants
This is an exciting technology, where an intraocular lens implant is placed inside the eye without removing the human lens. Thousands of lenses have been used outside the United States. There are a variety of lens types waiting for FDA approval for release in our country. These lenses offer reversibility and the ability to correct refractive errors too large for LASIK and other Laser Vision Correction. We will offer this technology as it becomes available.
